FRUIT BODY: 1 - 3cm in diameter. Begins life as an encrusting patch that later becomes a series of undulating brackets that are fused at the base. The upper surface is greyish to tan in colour, covered in white hairs and sometimes has zonal markings. The edge is pale and always wavy. Pores are absent and the fertile undersurface is a vivid lilaceous which fades when dry. FLESH: Thin, flexible and tough when damp, brittle when dried. SPORES: Hyaline, cylindrically rounded. HABITAT: In tiers on deciduous trees especially plum, apple, pear, willow and oak. Occasionally on conifers. SEASON: Common. Throughout the year. EDIBILITY: Inedible. |
